The Challenge
Aramiro Ahu Whenua Trust is transforming its 1,700-shareholder property through sustainable farming, forestry, native planting and future community-focused ventures, including a proposed native plant nursery.
The farm’s existing bore already supplies livestock operations, nearby homes and the neighbouring marae. However, a feasibility study found that the bore was a limited resource and could restrict future development. The Trust needed a reliable water-storage solution to support current demand while strengthening resilience for future growth.

The Solution
A 1,000m³ roofed water storage tank was selected to provide substantial additional capacity for the property.
The tank is supplied by rainwater collected from existing farm buildings, with its own 400m² roof area also contributing to rainwater harvesting. This creates a practical storage solution designed to make better use of available rainfall while reducing pressure on the existing bore supply.

Advantages & Benefits of the solution
The roofed storage solution supports the Trust’s long-term sustainability plans by increasing access to stored water and improving resilience against future demand pressures.
Its key benefits include:
Additional water capacity to support farming, the local community and future initiatives.
Rainwater capture from both farm buildings and the tank roof itself.
Reduced dependence on a limited bore resource.
Greater water security for proposed developments such as the native plant nursery.
A more resilient foundation for environmental restoration, training and community growth. The project demonstrates how large-scale rainwater storage can support productive land use, environmental stewardship and the long-term ambitions of a community-owned property.
