The Challenge
Sisam & Sons operates a large family-owned farming business near Whakatāne, including extensive dairy, forestry, sheep and beef operations.
Its dairy units previously relied on unlined effluent ponds, which were no longer suitable under evolving resource-consent requirements. Located within a floodplain, the farm also needed to move effluent storage above ground to reduce flood-related risk and strengthen environmental compliance.
The Solution
Three dedicated above-ground effluent storage tanks were installed between 2019 and 2023, with one serving each dairy shed located within the floodplain.
Together, the tanks provide more than 2.4 million litres of effluent storage capacity. An integrated jet stirring system helps keep effluent moving within the tanks, supporting effective management and easier handling.
The above-ground tank approach was selected instead of lined ponds or bladder storage, providing a more accessible solution for inspection, cleaning and ongoing operation.
