Uncovered tanks

A large circular water tank on a farm with green fields and buildings in the background.

Open, high-capacity above-ground storage designed for efficient effluent management and versatile liquid containment.

Downlands Uncovered Tanks provide a practical, large-volume storage solution for dairy effluent, agricultural liquids, washout facilities, rainfall catchment and specialist uses such as aquaculture. Particularly suited to on-farm effluent management, the tank design has been deployed in more than 500 dairy effluent installations.

With configurations available up to 6 million litres, these tanks offer substantial storage capacity without requiring below-ground ponds or extensive concrete bases. Their modular flatpack construction supports efficient transport and rapid installation, including on sites affected by soft soils, high water tables, floodplain conditions or restricted access.

Features & Benefits

  • Open high-volume storage -  Provides accessible large-scale liquid containment for dairy effluent, agricultural liquids, washout facilities, rainfall catchment and aquaculture applications.
  • Proven effluent-storage application -   The tank design has been used in more than 500 on-farm dairy effluent installations, demonstrating established suitability for agricultural operations.
  • Substantial storage capacity -  Configurations available up to 6 million litres, with tanks up to approximately 3m high and 48.9m in diameter.
  • Above-ground design -  Avoids the need for below-ground ponds and provides a practical option where water-table conditions or flood risk affect storage decisions.
  • Modular flatpack construction -  Simplifies delivery, export containerisation and on-site assembly, supporting projects in remote, restricted-access or difficult terrain locations.
  • Efficient installation -  Installation can typically be completed within approximately 1–7 days, subject to site preparation and project requirements.
  • Reduced groundworks -  In suitable conditions, tanks can be installed without toroidal rings or concrete bases, helping reduce installation complexity, cost and construction impact.
  • Suitable for challenging ground conditions -  Can be considered for sites with soft soils, peat, high water tables or floodplain constraints, subject to technical assessment.
  • Ground-movement resilience -  The modular design is engineered to accommodate ground movement and has demonstrated earthquake performance.
  • Durable & low maintenance -  Non-corrosive construction is designed not to rust or rot and is suitable for exposed or high-salt environments, with minimal ongoing maintenance requirements.
  • Flexible & relocatable -  Multiple configurations are available, with the potential for relocation where operational or temporary storage requirements change.
  • Customised operational fittings -  Options include drains, inlets and outlets, level indicators, wash-down systems, tanker connections, access hatches, valves, anchors and stainless-steel fittings.
  • Optional algae-control system -  Ultrasonic algae-control technology can be specified where management of algae on open water surfaces is required.
  • Long-term infrastructure value -  A stated 25-year design life supports long-term planning for agricultural and industrial liquid-storage requirements.

Suitable applications

  • Dairy effluent Storage
  • Agricultural liquid containment
  • Washout bays and truck yard
  • Rainfall catchment systems
  • Aquaculture and fish farming
  • Large-volume temporary or permanent storage
