The Challenge
Murray and Ruth Miers relied on an ageing open irrigation pond to provide water for their kiwifruit orchard during dry periods and for critical frost protection. By 2021, the pond had become a safety risk and required replacement.
The only suitable location for the new storage system was the site of the existing pond, which required careful decommissioning and civil preparation because it was located below sea level.

The Solution
The open pond was replaced with a custom 800m³ roofed water storage tank designed to support orchard irrigation and frost protection.
Its integrated rainwater-harvesting roof captures additional rainfall while helping protect stored water from sunlight, debris, birds and pests. A filtration system removes leaf matter before captured rainwater enters the tank, supporting cleaner and more efficient storage.

Advantages & Benefits of the solution
Once the site was prepared, the tank was installed in just one week. The complete project, including fabrication, site preparation and installation, was delivered within three months and completed ahead of the important spring frost period.
The solution provided:
A safer alternative to the former open irrigation pond.
Reliable stored water for irrigation and frost protection.
Rapid installation once civil preparation was complete.
Improved water protection through enclosed, filtered storage.
Additional rainwater capture to support more sustainable water management.
The result was a safer, more resilient water-storage system supporting the long-term productivity and protection of the orchard.
